An environmental management system is a set of processes and practices that enable a company to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. Using the ISO 14001 standard provides an internationally recognized framework for environmental management, and for many companies, ISO 14001 certification is a contractual requirement of customers. Local, state and federal government programs exist to reward companies that meet or exceed compliance standards, whether by offering reduced regulatory oversight, such as fast-track permitting, fewer inspections, and less-frequent reporting requirements.
