Online Halon Trader
Published January 1, 2008
Halons are fully halogenated hydrocarbons that exhibit exceptional fire-fighting effectiveness; they are used as fire-extinguishing agents and explosion suppressants. As ozone-depleting substances, they are controlled under Annex A of the Montreal Protocol. Halon banking tries to eliminate the demand for virgin halons by facilitating trade and reuse.
Not sure what these substances are? Use the site to access a list of trade names of chemicals that contain ozone-depleting substances. Then locate supply or demand by country, quantity, or halon type from public and private-sector halon banks around the world. An online information kit provides an introduction to halon banking, describes how to obtain recycled halon, explains the "essential use" concept, and lists contacts for national halon banks. For the more technical-oriented user, the site offers a guide to phasing out halon use and a list of international halon-recovery equipment manufacturers.
Supported by the United Nations Environment Program (through its OzonAction Program), the site also provides publications on UNEP's strategy to manage halons, as well as halon-management strategies by specific countries. The comprehensive site also gives case studies from companies and countries that have phased out ozone-depleting substances and/or implemented alternative technologies.
