Adoption of American Forest & Paper Association's comprehensive Environmental, Health, and Safety Principles and its Sustainable Forestry Initiative became mandatory for membership beginning in 1994. The association's activities address: process and technology modifications, chemical substitution, recycled-paper procurement, increased energy-efficiency and innovative practices, paper recycling and reuse, stewardship of natural resources, and increased efficiency of control measures. Each year, AF&PA recognizes outstanding efforts of forest products companies through its Environmental and Energy Achievement Awards program.
