WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Intel Corp. will buy 1.3 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy a year in a bid to stimulate the green power market, the company said Monday.
The commitment puts the chip maker at the top of the heap of companies buying renewable energy, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Intel ranks No. 1 on the EPA's Green Power Partners Top 25 list, as well as its Fortune 500 Green Power Partners list.
The Green Power Partnership program is comprised of more than 850 partner organizations. Second on the Top 25 list is PepsiCo, followed by Wells Fargo & Co., Whole Foods Market, The Pepsi Bottling Group and Johnson & Johnson.
In 2006, the EPA called on Fortune 500 companies to buy more than 5 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy by the end of 2007; the program exceeded this goal by 130 percent.
Buying renewable energy certificates, generating green energy on-site and buying green power directly from utilities all count toward the purchase requirements set by the program. The second Fortune 500 Challenge began this month and will run through late 2009.
