NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The new web portal, launched yesterday as part of the Carbon Disclosure Project, offers a one-stop shop for organizations of all sizes to calculate, compare and reduce their GHG emissions.

Akin to social networks like myspace and Facebook, OpenEco.org aims to help build support for carbon-reduction strategies though sharing information among companies, government institutions and NGOs, which, Sun said, all face the same pressure to create and meet serious goals to reduce their climate impact.

The only requirement to join OpenEco.org is for member groups to share their data, either transparently or anonymously, a requirement that is in line with the site's goals.

"Working together drives progress faster than working alone," said Dave Douglas, Vice President of Eco Responsibility at Sun Microsystems. "Sun was built on the philosophy of openness and building communities to solve problems, which we're now applying to the environment. When we share, sustainable business can be more attainable -- and prosperous -- for everyone."

OpenEco's GHG emissions tool lets organizations share their carbon accounting data that would otherwise be buried in their spreadsheets. Sharing the information lets means organizations of all kinds can benchmark against one another, set realistic reduction goals and share best practices to meet them.

Among the early adopters of OpenEco are Ceres, a coalition of investors and environmental groups, as well as environmental consulting firm Natural Logic.

"The OpenEco framework holds great promise in helping companies and organizations work together to reduce global warming pollution," said Andrea Moffat, Director of Corporate Programs at Ceres. "Social networks and technology are becoming increasingly important in addressing social and environmental problems."

Sun has long been sharing its own emissions data and advocating for environmental responsibility. The group was named to the Carbon Disclosure Project's Climate Disclosure Leadership Index yesterday as well, recognizing the company's leadership in disclosing its GHG emissions and developing goals to reduce them.
